Walk the site with your EHS lead and look for the following.

• Segregation: physical separation or fire-rated walls between incompatible classes, not just painted lines.
• Secondary containment: bunds, sumps or spill pallets sized for leaks from the largest containers, with drains that do not lead straight to storm water.
• Fire protection: detection, suppression suited to the materials stored, extinguishers of the correct type, hydrants and clear access for fire tenders.
• Ventilation: adequate air movement for materials that give off vapours, and flameproof electrical fittings where flammables are handled.
• Emergency equipment: spill kits, eyewash stations, safety showers and PPE, all in date and accessible.
• Labelling and records: hazard labels on every container and a live stock register so responders know exactly what is inside.

People and procedures

Equipment is only as good as the team using it. Ask how staff are trained in hazardous materials handling and emergency response, how often mock drills are held, and whether there is an on-site emergency plan shared with local responders. Ask who is responsible for safety at the site and how incidents and near misses are reported to customers.

Also ask about forklift and handling practices for drums, IBCs and bags. Damage during movement is one of the most common causes of leaks.

Environment and waste

A spill is not over when it is mopped up. Ask how contaminated absorbents, damaged packaging and expired material are disposed of, and whether the provider uses an authorised waste handler. Check who pays and who is named on the disposal paperwork.
